《红煤》是著名作家刘庆邦的长篇力作。小说叙述了一个农民出身的煤矿临时工如何不择手段向上爬的故事。主人公宋长玉是一家国有煤矿的农民轮换工，为了能够转成正式工，处心积虑地追求矿长的女儿，矿长借故将他开除了，他心中埋下了仇恨的种子。后来，他将红煤厂村支书的女儿追到手，成为村办煤矿的矿长。随着金钱滚滚而来，他的各种欲望急剧膨胀，原先的自卑化作了恶意的报复，将人性的恶充分释放了出来。刘庆邦是中国煤矿文学旗手。有一句话广为流传：到陕北，只要提路遥就有人管你饭吃；到矿区，只要提刘庆邦，就有人管你酒喝。
