In 2010, Black Interior Designers, Inc. began to unite, connect, and promote Black designers, bringing their projects into the spotlight. In Iconic Home: Interiors, Advice, and Stories from 50 Amazing Black Designers, BID creative director June Reese lends her thoughtful eye and powerful writing, weaving together inspiring interiors and the fascinating personal stories of each featured designer.

Featuring 50 industry stars, with notable names such as Justina Blakeney, Faith Blakeney, Adair Curtis and Jason Bolden of JSN Studio, Bridgid Coulter, Corey Damen Jenkins, Forbes Masters, General Judd, Keia McSwain, Brigette Romanek, Reese tells their stories and shares their challenges and triumphs. Design philosophies and creative influences are brought to light and are illuminated with wonderfully designed spaces in a range of styles. The result is a behind-the-scenes look at what it means to be a person of color creating work in the design industry today.

Interior designer Reese is the VP of Black Interior Designers, Inc., which strives to provide services and business opportunities for Black designers. By spotlighting 50 Black interior designers, Reese hopes to invigorate others in pursuit of their passions. Each write-up features an image and short biography of the designer, along with a Q&A and photos of interiors they've created. Some of the interview questions (like "Why is it important to layer a room design?") are repeated throughout the book, but they are carefully curated. By learning how being a Black designer affects their work or what they want to be remembered for, readers get a glimpse into the creators' influences and work ethics. For those hoping to get more concrete design tips, the featured professionals give advice on bringing the outdoors in, using color or texture, the importance of lighting, and more. They also offer their go-to simple tricks, such as being open to trying new and different things. VERDICT A stunning celebration of Black designers, their work, and their passions.--Whitney Bates-Gomez
