What's a bad boy to do with a woman like her?
Everything...
Aaliyah Montgomery isn't just ditching her wedding. She's also fleeing her suffocating small town and her family's expectations. She's got plans—for college, for finding herself. But landing a job in Chicago that fits her schedule isn't easy. Good thing Von Howard is desperate to find a live-in nanny. Bad thing that he's a gritty, grumpy, gorgeous tattoo artist carrying as much baggage as he has ink.
Von's new hire is inexperienced and a fire hazard in the kitchen. She's also all thick curls, thicker curves, and a distracting mix of innocence and sensuality. After the upheaval of a divorce, he just needs a nanny, not a sneaky link. Meanwhile, Aaliyah is bonding with his seven-year-old and showing an unexpected flair for tattoo art. Who could resist?
Yet deep down, Aaliyah's still running—from her feelings and her fear of losing herself to someone else's expectations again. Even as their pasts return to haunt them, their undeniable heat says maybe it's time to stand and fight for a love they didn't see coming.
From showing up to glowing up, the characters in Afterglow Books are on the path to leading their best lives and finding sizzling romance along the way. Don't miss any of these other fun titles...

When Aaliyah Montgomery becomes a runaway bride, she doesn't quite have it all figured out, but she does know that she wants to get far away from small-town Parsons, Alabama--and she doesn't want to be a bishop's wife like her mother. Her black sheep cousin, Tamara, lets her move in with her in Chicago, but after enrolling in college, Aaliyah still needs to find a job. Divorced tattoo artist Von Howard needs a live-in nanny for his six-year-old daughter Gia, but decides Aaliyah is way too innocent--until two nannies in a row don't work out, and he gets desperate. The attraction is intense, but they both have reasons why they shouldn't be more than friends. Don't let the cover art fool you, this Black romance by Simone (Christmas in Rose Bend, 2021) is hot and steamy, with a healthy dose of single dad, good girl / bad boy tropes, and grumpy / sunshine vibes.COPYRIGHT(2024) Booklist, ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

When Aaliyah Montgomery flees her tiny hometown and leaves her fianc at the altar, she doesn't have concrete plans beyond escaping the unrelenting expectations of being a preacher's daughter and earning a university degree of her own choosing. Though her cousin generously offers her a room, Liyah knows she's going to need a job as well. The only problem? Babysitting and teaching Sunday school aren't exactly the kind of job experience most employers look for. Tattoo artist legend Von Howard needs a nanny for his seven-year-old daughter, and he initially dismisses Aaliyah as too naive and inexperienced for the job. Desperate times call for desperate measures, though, and soon Aaliyah is charming his daughter and proving Von's prejudices wrong. When their relationship starts to cross the line, they'll have to overcome their troubled pasts in order to find a future together. VERDICT Simone's (An Off-Limits Merger) latest is a sexy story that's sure to be catnip for fans of the bad boy/good girl trope and single dad/nanny romances.--Rebecca Moe

A sheltered woman forges her own path in this formulaic opposites-attract romance from Simone (the Rose Bend series). Aaliyah Montgomery has always done what her conservative Christian parents want her to do, including agreeing to marry a man chosen by her bishop father. But after secretly applying and getting into the University of Chicago’s visual arts program, she sees a chance for a different life and flees her wedding for the big city. Her estranged cousin Tamara, whom her parents deemed a “bad influence,” offers her a place to crash while Aaliyah pursues her degree. She’s determined to pull her weight in the household, however, and applies for a nannying job. Divorced bad boy tattoo artist Von Howard is looking for a babysitter but when he interviews Aaliyah he sees that “innocence radiates from her” and worries about bringing her into his seedy world. Plus, it’s probably unwise to hire someone he’s so attracted to. But when the sitter he hires ghosts him, he’s left with no other options. Close proximity heats things up between the leads, but is a relationship worth the potential fallout? Aaliyah’s growing bond with Von’s daughter is endearing, but the predictable bad-boy/good-girl dynamic feels stale. Only diehard Simone fans need apply. Agent: Rachel Brooks, Bookends Literary.
